Colds and allergies can have the same types of symptoms.

Colds often come with fever, allergy normally does not.

Sinus allergies often become the perfect medium for an opportunistic cold virus to move in, thus giving you a combination.

The person who finds a sure way of telling the difference initially will make a fortune.
References :
Allergies normally last more than 2 weeks . Try a nasal spray of salt. Don't try to make your own as u will get it too strong or too week. I think it actually toughen the inside of the nose and keeps it from getting worse.
References :
Colds, infections, flu and allergies all involve the immune system – the body’s mechanism for resisting disease and infection. The immune system produces antibodies to eliminate foreign substances.

In the case of a cold, infection or flu, the foreign bodies are harmful bacteria or viruses. The immune system attacks these invaders, which have the potential to harm the body.

In the case of allergies, the body mistakes a harmless substance, such as pollen or dust, for a dangerous invader. It then launches an attack that leads to the symptoms commonly associated with allergies.

Lots more news on this below - it's not always easy to tell the difference! But, I think this info will help:
